9 Days of an Eco-Friendly Journey

At Eco Travels we created this 9-day trip to for our guests discover Sri Lanka in a way that’s closer to nature and more thoughtful. From the landscapes of Sigiriya and the mountains of Knuckles to the tea country, Ella, Yala and the southern coast each day offered something new. With stays in nature-focused places, including eco- cottages, forest retreats and a special treehouse this was more than a tour. It was a journey to experience Sri Lanka while respecting and caring for the environment. Here is the story of our 9 days journey, day by day.

Day 1 – Arrival in Sri Lanka & Into the Wilderness of Sigiriya

Kandy Sri Dalada Maligawa

Our trip started with greeting our guests at the airport and heading toward Sigiriya, one of the famous spots in Sri Lanka. As we left the city areas the view slowly changed into green countryside with tall tropical trees, small villages and paddy fields along the way. We reached Sigiriya Wild Cottage, a place to stay that is surrounded by greenery. After checking in our guests had time to unwind and enjoy the surroundings. On the first day we wanted the journey to show our eco-friendly way of traveling staying close to nature enjoying its beauty and choosing places where nature is part of the experience instead of being replaced by buildings.

Day 2 – Sunrise, Elephants and a Taste of Village Life

Kandy Sri Dalada Maligawa

Our second day began early with a visit to Pidurangala Rock, one of the best places in Sigiriya to experience the sunrise. We started the climb before dawn, reaching the top just as the sky began to brighten. As the sun began to rise over the forests and mountains the whole area slowly woke up alive with light and sound. In the distance Sigiriya Rock stood tall and striking glowing softly in the morning light. We stayed there a while soaking in the sunrise and the open views all around. It was peaceful, calm and truly special. After that moment we headed back down the path carrying with us the memory of our real look, at Sri Lanka’s natural beauty something that stayed with us for the rest of the day. Then we took our guests to Kaudulla National Park for a safari to see the elephant gathering. Watching groups of elephants moving through the park as the sun started to go down was a truly timeless memory. We think these moments are best enjoyed in silence and with respect so the animals can stay in their home.

After the safari we went back to our nature-based place, where the experience went beyond a hotel stay. Our guests had the chance to meet villagers and learn how to make and cook traditional food together. It was a fun experience that brought everyone closer to the local way of life. From picking the ingredients to cooking with the villagers our guests got to live Sri Lankan village life of just watching it. The adventure kept going with a buffalo ride through the village followed by a calm boat ride on a lake in a traditional oruwa. As the sun slowly went down the lake turned golden with lovely lotus flowers floating on the water. Surrounded by the village, greenery and the sounds of nature it was the perfect way to finish the day. We then went back to the place, surrounded by nature and the calm feel of the countryside. For us at Eco Travels this is what makes a journey special. It is not about visiting a place but experiencing its people, traditions, wildlife and nature in a real and memorable way.

Day 3: From Tea Country to the Knuckles Mountains

Kandy Sri Dalada Maligawa

After breakfast we continued our journey toward the Knuckles Mountain Range traveling through Matale and enjoying the changing scenery along the way. Day 7 was all about one of the thrilling wildlife adventures in Sri Lanka. A full day safari in Yala National Park. We woke up early. Drove into the park as the morning light slowly covered the wild area. Throughout the day the travellers got to see Yala’s types of land like forests and open fields as well as lakes and wetlands while searching for the amazing animals that live here. Elephants, deer, wild buffalo, crocodiles and many kinds of birds were some of the parts. Every moment in the park brought the thrill of not knowing what might come into view next. The long safari also gave everyone time to just enjoy the sounds the colors and the calm feeling of the wild without feeling in a hurry. For us at Eco Travels a safari is more than seeing animals. It is about stepping into their home with care staying at a safe distance and recognizing how important it is to keep these places safe. Spending a day in Yala let the travelers feel nature moving at its own speed and see why the wild areas of Sri Lanka are so special. After a day, with animals and beautiful landscapes we left Yala and moved towards the southern coast taking with us some very special memories of a day spent deep in the wild.

Later, we went to Galle taking time to explore the charm of the area and enjoy the coastal atmosphere. As the afternoon faded, we headed to the Madhu River for a peaceful boat safari. Cruising through waters surrounded by mangroves, greenery and wildlife let us see another side of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty. With the evening light over the river the day ended peacefully as we headed to our stay. 9 Days, Countless Memories on a Journey Close to Nature

Our nine-day journey with Eco Travels was more than moving from one place to another. From rocks and foggy mountain forests to tea farms, waterfalls, wildlife parks, treehouses, sunny beaches, coral reefs and historic towns each day gave a fresh way to feel Sri Lanka’s amazing nature and culture. What made the trip truly special was the chance to enjoy all these spots while staying close to nature and choosing a responsible way of travel. By staying in nature‑based lodges seeing wildlife exploring areas and meeting people Eco Travels learned that tourism can mean learning more and leaving less behind.
